29 Jun Election Fever Grips Coleridge
On the 9th of June, Coleridge was once again gripped with election fever as we held our traditional Coleridge Mock Election. Year 5 and 6 students campaigned hard for their political parties: Change, Focus, Impact and Motion. Each one worked tirelessly to create a manifesto, logo, and slogan, and they all had a clear campaign strategy around the school.
- Change ran a campaign that focused on a second Brexit referendum
- Focus wanted to make big businesses pay more tax
- Impact’s campaign focused on increasing funding for schools and hospitals
- Motion had a number of policies to help combat pollution
The campaigning culminated in a live debate on Friday morning. Lilah, Sofia, Ameer and Tilly superbly debated issues such as Brexit, Education, Health and Equality. The polls opened in the afternoon and all children from Years 2 – 6 had the opportunity to vote.
The results were very close, but ultimately Change were victorious! A huge congratulations to them.
The children in all the parties deserve immense credit, not only for their knowledge and fantastic work ethic, but also for the way they ran such positive campaigns, focusing on the strengths of their parties, rather than the weaknesses of their opponents. Some of our current politicians could certainly learn a thing or two!
A huge thank you to Sian Roberts of Electoral Reform Services, who once again provided all the ballot papers, as well as the ballot boxes.
