Kate Powell (a journalist at the BBC) came to 5P on Friday 8th March to talk to us about the importance of celebrating International Women’s Day. We found out that gender inequality is still very prevalent across the world today: women are still often not paid the same as men for the equivalent job, only 23% of politicians in parliaments across the world are women, and about 60% of illiterate people in the world are women. Kate also told us about a recent protest in India at the beginning of the year where women were not allowed to worship at a Hindu temple in Kerala, and what happened as a result of the protests.
Many thanks to Kate for an inspiring and informative lesson and Happy International Women’s Day to all!
