It’s been a fantastic year for our Year 5 and Year 6 Coleridge Debate Teams, who have taken part in a series of exciting competitions organised by DebateHub at South Hampstead High School.
In November, our Year 6 teams competed in a major tournament involving multiple teams from 21 different schools. Each team participated in three debates, arguing both for and against thought-provoking motions such as “It would be good to have superpowers” and “The school day should be shorter.” A huge congratulations to the Blue Team, who won all three of their debates and emerged as one of the overall winners!
In January, our Year 6 debaters returned for a special evening ‘Mix and Match’ event, where they were teamed up with students from other schools. One of the motions debated was “It is better to be the best player on a weak team than a below-average player on a strong team.” Congratulations to Marley and Charlie, who won all three debates with their teams.
In April, it was time for our newly-selected Year 5 teams to take to the floor for their very first debate competition. They did a fantastic job, with all teams winning at least one of their debates and thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Most recently, our Year 5s returned to participate in an evening ‘Philosophy Cup’ competition, where they explored and debated ethical dilemmas. Our Coleridge teams performed brilliantly, winning 8 out of 12 debates! Special congratulations go to the Orange Team, who won all three of their debates and were named overall winners.
We’re incredibly proud of all our debate teams this year. They’ve worked extremely hard, practised regularly (often giving up their lunchtimes), and shown real growth in their debating skills. Well done to everyone involved.
