Last half term, Year 1 explored the work of Sonia Delaunay in their Art lessons. They looked at the way she arranged geometric shapes in her paintings and found out about her intuitive responses to colour. They used this opportunity to learn about primary and secondary colours and gain some colour-mixing skills. Then they designed and painted some wonderful Sonia Delaunay inspired compositions.
Sonia Delaunay was also renowned for her fabric and fashion designs. The children used photocopies of their paintings as ‘fabric’ and after some experimenting with cutting and folding to transform flat, geometric paper shapes into 3D ‘wearable’ forms, the children used their paper ‘fabric’ to create the most fantastical outfits for their fashion maquettes. We think they are worthy of the catwalk – and some valuable skills were learned in the process! Well done Year 1.
