06 Nov School Council Visited WHY? Festival
Children from the School Council recently went to the WHY? Festival (What’s Happening for the Young) at the Southbank Centre in central London. The children have been learning about what rights they have as children, and how they are protected by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
As part of this, we took part in a workshop exploring what we want and what we need; the children discussed how they are very different things. We heard beautiful and inspiring protest songs, and took part in a ‘Q & A’ with the editor of First News, which is a newspaper for children. Finally, we used our handprints to sign up to the convention, and stated that we would respect the rights of children around the world and fulfil the responsibilities that come with these rights.
The children were inspirational in their careful consideration and well thought out comments; Hana in Year 6 made such a good point that it was tweeted to the whole world by Unicef!
