12 Apr Sports Report Spring Term 2 2016
A short but busy half-term saw a wealth of success for Coleridge.
The first week saw our runners competing in the Highgate Wood Cross Country Races through the thick mud of Alexandra Palace Park. Competing against four other primary schools, Coleridge won all but one of the six medals on offer.
A week later, some of the same runners were in action in the Haringey Cross Country Championships, this time competing against 39 other schools in the boys’ race, and 28 in the girls’. The boys’ team of Jack Bonfield, Eren Mentesh, Eric Keen and Ruben Hyam managed a very creditable second place, with Jack coming second of the 163 competitors. The girls achieved nearly as highly, reaching fourth place. Charlotte Aufenast reached 11th place of the 144 finishers.
In the same week our hockey players competed in the Haringey Kwik Sticks Tournament at Fortismere School. Although they did not progress beyond the group stages, they demonstrated both skill and team work in a high-standard completion.
Year 4 were also involved in hockey matches when a group of 12 went to Highgate Wood School for an afternoon of both skills training and small scale competitive matches. With the emphasis on enjoyment, a good time was had by all.
The lunchtime dance club went to the New Theatre, Wimbledon to perform alongside nearly 30 other schools in the regional heats of the Great British Dance Off. After being successful in the video round, the lucky 24 Coleridge children from Years 4 – 6, had the opportunity to perform on stage. Opening the show, and up against some tough competition, the children did themselves, and Coleridge, proud!
In March, The Coleridge Cycling Team took part in a hill climb in Finsbury Park against other schools from the Borough. The children covered a distance of roughly 250m on the hill climb. First impressions were that it looked quite simple, but the aching legs at the finish line told a different story! In the 26″ frame class Jerome and Flora recorded our best times, with 53:36 and 58:65 respectively. In the 24″ frame class Benny and Edie recorded our best times, with 1:06:40 and 1:19:53 respectively. We are currently third in the league overall, but the team are eager to improve this over the coming months.
The term was completed by the Highgate Wood Year 5 Football tournament. We entered three boys’ teams in the six-a-side competition, with one team reaching the final after a successful penalty shoot-out in the semi-final. The final was also decided by a sudden-death shoot-out, but unfortunately this time Coleridge was not successful.
