13 Jul Families Week
The week beginning the 27th June was ‘Families Week’ at Coleridge. We enjoyed celebrating the diversity of families that we have at our school, and the children participated in a wide range of activities all designed to motivate children to consider what ‘family’ means to them. Around the school children were enjoying drumming workshops, baby watching, diversity role models workshops, family portraits, cooking family recipes and much, much, more.
Teachers also ran assemblies during the week where they shared their own family stories and backgrounds with the children, all with the intention of reassuring children that all families at Coleridge, no matter what their make-up, are unique, valued and special. Thank you to those parents, carers and family members who were able to come into school to talk about their families and participate in activities.
We also shared a philosophy stimulus as a school – a story book called King and King. Here are some of the wonderfully philosophical questions that the children came up with in response to this stimulus:
“I think girls and girls can get married and boys and boys can get married.” – Reception
“I wonder why the prince with the yellow crown doesn’t like princesses.” – Year 1
“How will King & King make the next King or Queen?” – Year 2
“What is love?” – Year 3
“Why was gay marriage illegal?”- Year 3
“Should some laws be changed?” – Year 3
“Why did the Queen want the prince to be married?” – Year 3
“What makes people attractive to each other?” – Year 4
“Should we be free to make our own choices?” – Year 5
“What is normal?” – Year 5
“Is tradition always a good thing?” – Year 6
