15 Nov 20th November Is Car Free Day
Monday 20th November marks the culmination of our air quality project sponsored by Haringey Council, as well as the start of National Road Safety Week. A team of children from Years 5 and 6 were selected for a sustainable travel initiative in which they considered ways to reduce air pollution in our local community. The team has been working with PWLC Projects to produce a 10 minute walk map to encourage more people to walk to school.
On the 20th November we will hold a Car Free Day on which we are encouraging the school community to leave their cars at home for the day, and travel more sustainably. In the morning, the project team will present an Air Quality Assembly to the juniors and after school they will be handing out the walking map for the school. The map also includes information on travel, road safety and air quality.
At the after school event, PWLC Projects will be on hand to offer personal travel planning advice, and there will be a Dr Bike session where you can bring your bicycle in for minor repairs at no cost. There will be a giant game of Snakes and Ladders and we will also be running a Golden Lock competition. Three bikes or scooters ridden in that day will be chosen at random and the riders will win a prize!
This year saw some of the highest levels of pollution recorded in London, exposing children to illegally high levels of toxic air. It is much healthier for you and better for the environment to walk, cycle or scoot to school and children can also develop their road safety skills.
We have been thoroughly impressed with the level of dedication that the children have shown throughout this project. They have had a chance to practice their presentation skills as well as developing an understanding of air quality and sustainability issues. Whether it is cycling, scooting or walking to school, or coming to speak to the team at the after school stand, please join us in supporting them on the day!
Well done to the children involved – Mia, Miles, Amelia and Joe from Year 6, and Anna, Elijah, Rae, Jonah, Mia, Amaya and Ella from Year 5.
